A meeting of agitating student unions aligned to various political parties today decided to impose a Kathmandu Valley bandh on May 9 against the move to recommend Lokman Singh Karki as chief commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.
The meeting held at the office of the CPN-UML-aligned All Nepal National Free Students Union this evening also decided to stage a torch rally and submit a memorandum to President Ram Baran Yadav tomorrow.
UP Lamichhane, spokesperson for the Nepal Students Union-aligned Nepali Congress, said that since Karki’s appointment will be against people’s sentiments and the mandate of Jana Andolan-II, the student unions decided to stage joint protests against the same. The students are scheduled to stage chakka jam before all campuses in the morning tomorrow demanding that the government withdraw the recommendation for Karki’s appointment.
Students said they will not obstruct emergency service vehicles and school buses during their bandh and other protests. The bandh on Mother’s Day is likely to hit public hard.
