The largest global ranking shows that US universities’ dominance in research is decreasing. With 179 universities, the United States is the most represented country overall, as well as the most represented in the top 200 with 57, despite the fact that the proportion of universities in this exclusive group is declining. Last year’s rankings had 183 universities in the States ranked, showing a decrease in the no of universities listed this year.

Similarly, with the University of Minnesota, the University of Maryland, College Park, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, and Dartmouth College all dropping out of the top 100, the US now has 34 universities in the top 100, down from 38 last year and 41 five years ago. With seven universities in the top 100, up from six last year and three five years ago, China has increased its representation in the rankings.

China is also coming up regarding research quality, as indicated by citations. China’s average citation score notably climbed over the past year, rising from 55.6 to 58.0, whereas the US score somewhat decreased, falling from 70.0 to 69.4.

THE World University Rankings 2023 rank 1799 universities from 104 countries and regions, making them the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.
